5 Benefits of Coconut Oil for Skin and Hair

Coconut oil is widely used in the cosmetics industry, which is not surprising: it has antibacterial and antifungal properties, is an excellent moisturizer, and penetrates deeper into the hair structure than most other oils.

“Our research has shown that coconut oil is suitable even for people with atopic dermatitis,” notes Tireona Loudog, MD, director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. “Many women with sensitive or problematic skin choose it as an overnight facial moisturizer.”
1. Relieves dry and irritated skin on hands.
Coconut oil-based products work wonders on skin damaged by frequent contact with detergents (after all, hardly anyone wears gloves when washing dishes, right?). “I always keep a jar of coconut oil next to the kitchen sink,” says Loudog. “If you love using it for cooking, save some for hand care too: it’s incredibly nourishing and moisturizing.”
Coconut oil also helps restore the skin’s protective barrier thanks to its lauric acid content, which promotes the healing of microcracks and reduces inflammation. It can be applied several times a day, especially after contact with water, to prevent further drying of the skin.
2. Provides deep hydration to hair.
That’s why many conditioners contain coconut oil: it penetrates the hair shaft much more effectively than vegetable and mineral oils, saturating the hair with moisture. “For deep conditioning, I use coconut oil,” says Tasheen Bhatia, MD, owner of the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine. “I apply the oil to my hair and leave it on overnight under a shower cap to enhance the effect, then simply rinse it out with shampoo in the morning.” You can use any coconut oil-based products: apply them to your hair for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water.
Furthermore, coconut oil strengthens the hair structure, reducing breakage and split ends. It helps fight dandruff thanks to its antifungal properties and adds natural shine without weighing hair down.
3. Effectively cleanses the skin
A coconut oil scrub moisturizes the skin and is suitable for even the most delicate and sensitive skin. To make your own, mix one part melted butter with half a part brown sugar or salt and mix thoroughly. If desired, add 5 drops of your favorite essential oil for scent and extra care.
Coconut oil is also used as a gentle cleanser—it effectively dissolves impurities and excess sebum without stripping the skin’s natural protective layer. This approach is suitable for daily care, especially for dry and combination skin.
4. Removes even long-lasting makeup
Coconut oil is excellent for removing waterproof mascara and other long-lasting makeup. Apply a small amount of organic coconut oil to a cotton pad and gently cleanse your eyes. The oil will gently remove makeup while simultaneously nourishing the skin around your eyes, leaving it softer and more nourished.
Additionally, thanks to its emollient properties, coconut oil helps reduce irritation and redness after makeup removal, preventing dryness and fine lines in the delicate eye area.
5. Protects the skin from the harmful effects of the environment
Coconut oil forms a thin protective film on the skin’s surface, which helps retain moisture and protects against harmful factors such as cold, wind, and pollution. It contains antioxidants, including vitamin E, which help fight signs of premature aging and restore skin cells.
Using coconut oil as a day or night treatment helps maintain skin firmness and elasticity, and also accelerates the regeneration process after sunburn or microtrauma.
6. Gives hair a natural shine
For a natural shine, apply a small amount of oil to the ends. It is important to use a small amount of the product to avoid making hair look greasy.

How to properly use coconut oil in your personal care
For your face, choose a cosmetic or edible oil labeled “refined” to minimize the risk of clogged pores. Gently massage it in with your fingertips, avoiding the eye area.
Before applying to your hair, warm the oil to body temperature by melting it in your palms. Distribute from roots to ends, concentrating on dry areas and damaged strands. Leave on for 30–60 minutes, then rinse with shampoo.
Use coconut oil to massage your body after a shower, while your skin is still warm. This will improve circulation and help moisturize rough areas like elbows and knees.
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and rinse with cool water.
